That's torn it.
I was running my set testing out a possible gradient for my layout. Round and round up and down. I flicked the reverse switch to send the train in the other direction and it didn't move. Thats odd I thought. Perhaps the gears on one of the power cars jumped out of mesh. I fiddled with the wheels a bit and it ran again. Until I reversed direction and it did it again. I did some more fiddling but nothing. So I decided that the top had to come off to see if anything had happened inside. Well to cut a long story short I've lost one coupler hook and destroyed one spring the whole thing fell to pieces and it definitely doesn't go any more. 
At least I still have a single unit railcar though...

But as I was planning to try to convert a car to a DMU possibly a KIHa 54 at some point. I think that's what I'll do. Once I can get this car running again

I've experienced that too and now also have a dead power car, albeit intact. Did you find any clues when you opened it up?

BTW: what gradient did you achieve? I note the one on the Maiami layout (Eishindo's web site) looks quite severe. |

I don't think the motor is entirely dead. Because it makes a noise when I put the power car on the track. Doesn't move but it makes a quick noise like the motor wants to turn over but stops. Perhaps there is an issue with the contacts to the motor do you think?
I wasn't experimenting with anything extreme gradient wise 1 in 25, 1 in 30. That all. Just enough to raise the track up to make it noticeable

I think it may be time for some methodical checking. If you have some spare wire, I'd start by applying power to the motor directly, without the gearbox, and see if it runs smoothly in both directions.
Then, place the gearbox over the power truck, hold it in its proper location, and apply power again. If it runs smoothly in both directions, try reassembling the unit carefully and try it on the track.
If it doesn't run with the gearbox in place, check the gearbox and the power truck for any debris that might be jamming the gears. Rinsing everything out with alcohol wouldn't hurt. Reassemble and try again.
I've found that it's possible during reassembly to not get the shell properly located on the frame, and if there's the slightest bit of play, the motor will not engage the gearbox. This is due to the chassis being so flexible, and may be a recurring issue with this whole product line.
Eventually as you work your way from the motor through the powertrain to the wheels, you should find the problem.
