OK, I finally got my butt in gear and made some headway on a T layout. I broke with all previous plans in order to make a "starter layout" so that I could get a feel for the scale. It's so different from any other that I think this will be a good exercise.

Grand looking start there David.
It looks like we have a relative glut of layouts on the go now.
You make an interesting point in your blog about how because everything is so small compared to what we're used to, conventional planning techniques go out of the window.

Why do you have to post something like this? Razz

I have had a T-gauge set in my watch list at e-bay. Haven't pulled the trigger yet.

Good start David, I like the track plan. simple, no nonsense. A great starter layout by any means.

Can't wait to see how it shapes up. Have you thought about locale? Urban, rural, mountain...?

Thanks! Locale would be, naturally for me, the Northeast. I'm waffling between urban, suburban and rural; maybe a mix of suburban and rural, but not mountain. I don't want it to be "dramatic," ironically enough; I'm most interested in "ordinary" to the point of bordering on "boring" (reasons to come at another time). Rolling stock, for starters, will probably be an RDC or two, so there will definitely be a passenger station to build, at the very least.

If you're going for Northeast, Urban/Suburban, and RDC you may want to look into the the LIRR's Greenport Scoot. It was operated Patchoge to Montauk by a pair of RDC's from 1955 to 1967 (when one of the pair was wreaked in a grade crossing incident)

Thank you! I also found that site, and your suggestion is right in line with my thinking.

I had one of those head banger moments when I realized I had said the Greenport Scoot ran from Patchoge to Montauk. I was thinking about a totally different service. The Scoot ran from Greenport to Amengansett. Embarassed

Yes, I'm looking at building a pair of prototypically-correct RDCs--at least within the realm of feasibility.

I want to build a couple RDC's too! The NP used the RDC2 and RDC3's.

Here is an NP RDC3:
