and having spent a productive lunch hour finding other photographs. I think I can safely say I'll start work on a layout inspired by Hitsu station soon.
I'll start sketching some presentation ideas tomorrow

Well, Here's the first page from my sketchbook giving an idea of what the layout could look like.
Size is approximately 4' x 14". I might be able to eke a couple more inches all around out of it I build the baseboard right.
Describing the drawing from the right side. A train appears towards the rear from out of a clump of trees, navigates the curve, perhaps on an embankment, crosses the road and pulls into the station. This station scene will hopefully as pictured in that first photograph I found. The train will pull out of the station and pass in front of buildings and trees, perhaps behind a few of them as well to break the journey up and make it feel like you are traveling further, before rounding another curve and heading towards the rear of the layout, crossing the road again and exiting from sight. The road that travels along the rear of the layout will have some typically Japanese houses lining it and a tree covered hill in the distance to hide the fact that when the line disappears at the left it joins up with the line at the right.
Nice and simple, nothing too taxing to start with. It might even be relatively quick to build.
Any thought/comments appreciated.

Ian,
Love the image you posted, and this would be the perfect environment for a Japanese train. the Cherry blossoms and rolling scenery will definitely make for a beautiful layout. Keep us posted, can't wait to see your progress. |

Ian, that's a nice, simple plan. I like the fact that you're not using tunnels to hide the train along the back.
I see you may also be making some progress researching the rolling stock (noticed the posts on Yahoo).

Even though I do have my HO scale layout booked in for the St. Cloud, MN trainshow on December 13th, at the moment I'm much keener to get working on Hitsu and take it instead.
I bet the exhibition manager would prefer it too. You can see a HO scale layout any day. But how often do you get to see a T gauge Japanese layout?

Or a T gauge layout, period--Japanese or otherwise? I think it will go over exceptionally well.

Well, now I have my work cut out for me !
I emailed the show organizer this afternoon and he emailed me pretty much straight back. Hitsu is confirmed for the Granite City Trains show on December 13th.
I'd better get busy.

So lets work this out. The show is December 13th. The weekend before I'm in Las Vegas to run the marathon. So I have to have the layout finished or mostly so, by the start of December.
So far I've got a baseboard, a station platform 5 1/2 houses and 22 trees in varying states of completion. As well as the stock.
The extra track to complete the layout is winging its way from Japan. Another 20 trees would be nice as would another 5 or 6 houses. Plus that platform shelter and the single storey building alongside the station.
Trees are easy I could probably put 20 armatures together in a week. Houses are slow going but I can make them easily enough.
Painting up the track a la David's method is desireable too.
Easy  all I have to do is pull all the disparate elements together, put down some ground cover and a road or two.
Oh and building a PWM controller would be a nice extra.
Anyone think of anything else?

I was thinking about that. I really should have another 103 set as a back up for the show and I was mulling over the idea of converting some of the units to some diesel railcars. That would be at the bottom of the to-do list though

Today's the day!
I'm done in the office at 8:30am today (system issues means I won't get much done anyway). So on the way home I'm making a trip to Menards, pick up some baseboard material and start construction on the layout proper. 
I'm pretty excited

I am convinced that I may be one of the worst woodworkers in the world...
You would think it almost impossible to make a pigs ear of a piece of 1/4" ply size 4' x 17" braced with 2' x 1' stripwood. I can do it. No problem. Despite this the baseboard is now made and the glue is setting on the pieces of 1 1/2" foam that I have glued to the baseboard...

Got a bit more work done on developing the scenics. I have the right hand side coming together nicely. Here's a couple of test shots of the right hand side
