I have to tell someone, if I don't I'll burst.
Having decided that I'm going to put a shrine on top of the hill on the layout I did some researching. I decided the first thing I needed to do was build a Torii gate http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torii
While looking for some idea of size I happened across a writing on the theory of the proportions of the Torii gate.
So, you've guessed it. I've started work on a correctly proportioned 1:450 scale Torii gate.
I won't go for an exact copy of one, at 1:450 scale who could tell anyway. But the idea of building something like this is pretty darned exciting to me.
Any way feel free to ignore the ramble...

This is how easy it is
Just stick together lengths of styrene tube and strip. hold it together with pins while the glue sets

and then a bit of filler later you have this

After a clean up and a spray of primer and some red paint it will be ready to go. A real easy quick and simple project that, as with the lighthouse. I probably spent more time thinking about than working on so far.

That will be a really nice, "classically Japanese" touch for the layout. Well done!

According to the "rules" the height of the opening is 10 times the thickness of the pillars (hirashi). My Hirashi are 2.4mm tubing so the opening is 24mm or about 10 scale meters which as Torii gates go doesn't seem to be unusual.
I might just make a slightly smaller one though

So having built one Torii I decided to build a smaller one. It is quite correct to have more than one Torii of different sizes at a Shinto shrine as the Torri signifies the entrance to a holy part of the shrine. The larger the Torii, the holier the part of the shrine is.
So here are two Torii

The one on the left won't get any more work done to it. The larger one will get a bit more detailing done as would befit the entrance to the shrine itself.
