Okay, I was running my train checking things out -- there's a local NMRA show next weekend and I'm hoping to show at least a little about T.

I'm running a power car - the one that's currently running better, with an end car, and the train suddenly stops and the power light on the controller dims. Uh, oh, a short. It seems to be in the motor car. I try popping it apart and haste makes waste lose two contact springs. Hmm, the pinion seems to be rubbing the frame.

There is about .7mm end play in the motor shaft, which does not seem at all right. Occasionally the motor spins on applying power, sometimes not, sometimes short. Definitely not good.

Anyone else lose a motor? Any thoughts or suggestions?

Regretfully,

Bob

Hey this looks close.

Same diameter, length, shaft diameter, voltage. Similar mounting method. Hmm.

Im quiet sure the motors are mobile phone vibrate motors. i have pulled a few old phones apart before and found most of the motors to be the same, altho getting the offset weight of can be tricky. i have also seen those motors in the tail rotors of tiny infa red controlled helicopters.

The Japanese shop linked below has suitable motors. I bought several dozen 3.2 mm motors from them last year and the mercahndise arrived in seven days. Thats better than most shops here in the US..

Hi,

I found a UK supplier of motors of the exact size of the originals:

www.precisionmicrodrives.com

I have a couple on order and will let you know how the replacement goes..... has anyone else successfully replaced a motor yet?

Alan

Exuse the ignorance, but would the geared motor fit within the constraints of the t gauge? Would this give finer control?

Well.. When I said exact size I hadn't realised that the motor bearing was slightly bigger. The motor body is exactly the right size.

Still bit of work with a diamond file on the gearbox housing and all appears to be well.

The benefit of this motor is it actually appears to have a bearing, unlike the original. Will let you know if the train actually goes!

Alan,

Which motor is it that you purchased? the site has 2 4 x 8 motors listed, the one with the wires and the one in the rubber boot.

The one in the boot looks very close to the original.

Hi Bob,

Not ignoring you - Sorry - work overtook me!

I got part no. 104-001. These came within 2 days and were increadibly cheap (about £3 each).

They are a very close fit but the flange at the shaft end is about 0.3mm bigger. This means you have to mod the gearbox to get it to fit.

The good news is it not only fits but runs very well Very Happy

at about the same speed as the original.

However there is an easier option. Get your Eishindo disti to order T-M001.

This is an original Eishindo replacement motor!
