I ran both of the power cars back-n-forth for a few seconds with a regular MRC power pack turned way down. Not long enough to know if they are good runners or not so I need to get working on a proper controller.

I sort of outlined the whole etching process here:

Maybe I can make some extras...

RDC3 done.

The coupler between them will probably end up just being wires.

Chris, a stirling job, and those steps on the 3 look just fine. I hope that I'll be able to do as well, because that's just what I hope to see running on my layout... someday...

And I too plan to MU them permanetly, with jumpers between them to enhance performance.

I think these shorties actually look better than they would have full length because of the trucks. Since the T Gauge trucks are shorter than the RDC trucks, they now look more properly proportioned than they would have on a stretched unit.

Great looking pair.

I wonder if it's possible to modify the truck sideframes by shaving off the bolster suspension detail and adding etched-brass drop equalizers. I have a hunch you may have trouble keeping them glued on though.

TBA,
Truck over lays are in the works. They might end up looking more RDCish, but are a much shorter wheelbase. I did do a sideframe etching, we will see how that works out.

David,
I know what you mean about the length. The reason I never bought a N scale RDC was I thought they were too long for my curves.

I guess now I have picked the New Haven for a road name. I figure that black lettering down the side would be impossible and the NH logos on the end would be hard as well. So I will just paint the ends while with a red stripe like this:

Funny you should mention the New Haven. I'd always been fascinated by these wierd RDCs:

"Roger Williams" train set, built for the New Haven. Differs considerably from standard RDCs.

Those RDCs are looking very nice. Don't ruin them by adding the NH 'streamline' cab. Shocked

Wouldn't dream of it.

Did you notice the shortened RDC in the background?

Yes, I bought a Kato CNJ RDC, and promptly re-sold it for exactly the same reason.

Those look big enough to possibly render. I hope Robert Ray checks in--he does mighty fine lettering on his ALPS. I could see it being rendered in red, with the logo being transparent, so you wouldn't have to paint the stripes.

That looks like it might be one of those rare RDC4s, built for RPO/baggage only (although some were converted to haul passengers). Only 72-73 feet long, IIRC.

Yeah I think that is a RDC4 in the back ground. I should have modeled one, but they weren't that plentiful in real life. I picked a RDC3 just because I thought they looked cooler than a RDC2. The RDC1 was a "must-do".

I also notice the roof vents in the baggage section of the RDC3. I modeled those with Grandt Line rivets. And a small section of square styrene was inserted into a drilled hole to model the boxy loud speaker type horns at each end.

Am I the only one who likes the Roger Williams' face?

The RDCs look really stunning! I can't wait to see them finished and in action.

P.s. so that's how etching works! Maybe I can ask some acquaintances in the Netherlands who are professional etchers to etch a project.
Doesn't look that difficult, but you have to have the equipment to do it...

Toni,

I use autoCAD for the etching artwork, if your friends can use my CAD drawings let me know and I will e-mail them to you.
