I decided to move forward with modeling VIA's f40ph, and here is an preview of my efforts thus far.

Following advice I read on the trainboard, I sanded the sides of one of the unpowered cars smooth and laminated it with precut styrene.

I'm fairly happy with the results thus far - I still need to finish the body and add a few details.

This is shaping up nicely. It will be very interesting to follow the progress!

Yes, this is a dummy. Its very difficult to shorten the powered units without seriously carving-up the drive mechanism.

I still need to meditate on what details I'm going to add. The size of the some of the parts would be so negligible that it seems like a great deal of effort just model an almost undetectable detail.

Agreed.

Handrails and grab irons may be possible, but they'd pretty much have to be flush with the carbody.

A grab iron would be about 1-1.5mm wide if done to scale with fine wire. Horns could be done with fine wire as well

Can't wait to see the finished result Michael, looks awesome so far.

Are you just going to use strandard Eishindo trucks?

Yes, I'm going to work with the original trucks. I'm interesting in trying all the facets of this scale (eager to handlay some track) so I'm going to settle for good enough.

Its interesting to note that while I was working on the model (and almost going blind) I carefully scrutinized every detail I could, but when I set the model down, and looked at it from a standard viewing distance, those details faded.

I'm thinking I'd like to build a layout that is 18"x72", and the viewing angle would likely be 48", which means I can't see the trucks - unless I get down to eye level.

At this point, I'm going to do as much as my exacto will allow, and then move to the next stage.

Very Nice Work Michael! It would be cool if you could figure out how to use the light board for headlights.

As far as paint schemes go, I think it would be real cool if you could do one of the VIA Koolaid schemes! That one would be so Kool that you don't have to worry about any details! Cool

Koolaid paint scheme.... Wow. You'll be lucky if I can stripe this thing, let alone add a bunch of "O-Yeah!"

I'm thinking about lighting, unfortunately I needed to 'destroy' the on board lighting in order to modify the engine. I'm wondering about adding a fiber optic light, but we'll have to see how nimble my fingers are!

I'm happy to report that my F40PH has graduated past the proof-of-concept phase and is now a real running model! I finished a few last details this evening and shot a cruddy video for prosperity.

I learned a few things this evening for next time.

First, there is no room for lights. Once I had cut down the weight to add to the unit, there was simply no room left for onboard circuitry.

Second, I had cut down the original car from the end, which heavily complicated seating the undercarriage as it was missing some of its slots. Done again, I would remove material from the centre.

Overall, I'm happy. The details are crude and are out of scale, but I think the essence is there. It would be nice to have a brass etched sleeve to drop over the exterior, or a resin cast from a 3d prototyped car, but for an xacto knife special, this well may be the upper limit of my modeling ability.

Outstanding! Put some NA coaches behind that puppy, and you'll have a world first.

Michael, Awesome work! Have you got some close-up shots of this gem? How does it feel to have the first published pictures of a North American prototype T Gauge loco? Very Happy

Holy cow! I had to join this forum just to reply to this.

Michael, The F40PH looks great! I can really see an all American train now. Get this finished, stay on Robert to get passenger cars together, keep David's eyeglass prescription filled and you guys just might have something here. Wink
